ESC's Darryl Maximilian Robinson Presents A Mini-Review of ILLUMINATION'S "MINIONS AND MONSTERS" At The Regal Cinemas LA Live!

ESC'S DARRYL MAXIMILIAN ROBINSON PROVIDES A 2026 MINI-REVIEW OF ILLUMINATION'S "MINIONS AND MONSTERS" AT THE REGAL CINEMAS LA LIVE!:
First, let me say, Illumination's"Minions and Monsters" is a very funny movie, a charmer of the summer film season, and a film entire families and groups of friends should go see not only for the many laughs, but cinema history it provides for an entire generation of young people and older adults unaware of how Hollywood began. This film homages those real beginnings within the context of a mythical fairy tale and animated screen adventure that is absolutely hilarious!
Featuring a lively and period evocative score by John Powell, a fine and tight display of editing by Gregory Perier, and distinguished production presentation in all other elements of design ( including outstanding animation, sound and special effects ), Director, screenwriter and veteran voice performer Pierre Coffin successfully takes the "Despicable Me" / "Minions" film franchise into a different, fun, fresh, and delightfully, both a nostalgic and new direction.
Co-written with highly effective and skilled comedy associate Brian Lynch, Coffin's spanking new pre-Gru entry of "Minions and Monsters," playing currently in the fine and comfortable confines of Cinema 2 at The Regal Cinemas LA Live is truly a screen treat for moviegoers both young and old. It evokes the The Hollywood Golden Age ( the 1920s and historic events of that decade, principally, but if you watch the wonderful animated art on screen you will see suggestions of film from the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s.) It does arouse memories and figures of silent movie stars and early sound film stars of of the dawn of the film industry. Early in the film, we get verbal and non-verbal cameos on screen by comedy legends Buster Keaton and Bugs Bunny.
But before they get to Hollywood, James and Henry of The Minions have a big learning curve. James has a fine talent for visual art and verbal storytelling that, unintentionally, leads to unfortunate consequences for more than one Evil Leader he and his entire tribe of Minions is trying to serve. Henry bravely admires James for his grit, talent and tenacity and stands by him through thick and thin. They are joined by a hearty and loyal hearing-impaired ( and sign language adaptive ) Minion named Ed. And these Three Musketeers of Minions ( once introduced to the wonders and magic of Hollywood by an unexpected interaction with film director Max - wonderfully voiced by Oscar Winner Christophe Waltz ) learn to stand in opposition to the Minions Tribal Leader known as Dick. All of the voices of each Minion character is provided by Pierre Coffin and he is charming and touching and very funny with these members of his dramatis personae.
After becoming a huge initial success in Hollywood during the height of the silent movie era as reliable, bankable stars, The Minions lose all of their good fortune when the unique language they speak, Minionese, does not translate well to sound movies. But, James, with the gift of a film camera provided his film director friend Max, has a plan for a comeback. James draws up the storyboard for a full-length motion picture entitled "Minions and Monsters." The only problem is James' monsters won't be coming from central casting. And with the arrival of the many-eyed, oozing, really oozing, orange-colored, blob known as Eyereen out to consume and destroy all of Hollywood, it takes many a brave Minion and even a love-smitten alien robot from outer space to help make things right again.
This all entertainingly told and hilariously presented with just a touch of romance for the robot and his earthling female advocate for A Woman's Right To Vote. Jesse Eisenberg as the voice of Dort and Zoey Deutch as the voice of Debbie are fine supporting players.
Other strong voice acting for this wonderful animated film is provided by a versatile Jeff Bridges as both Frank and Elwood Bright, the very large, good-cop / bad-cop, twin sibling producers and owners of The Bright Brothers Studios and a solid Allison Janney as Olivia, the committed tour guide of a modern age Hollywood museum ( which is highlighted by a hilarious cameo by filmmaker and screenwriter George Lucas as a behind the glass exhibit ). Illumination's "Minions and Monsters" is good for kids. It is good for adults. It is good for anyone who likes to go to the movies for a good time and just ( for a time ) forget their troubles. It is easily one of the best animated films of the year, and overall screen comedies of the year. Go. Final Score: Three Out of Five Stars. Excellent and hilarious.
