Introduction To The Stage Career of Veteran and Award-winning Theatre Artist Darryl Maximilian Robinson
Born in Chicago in 1960 and currently celebrating 50 years of involvement in The Performing Arts, Darryl Maximilian Robinson is a veteran and award-winning stage actor, play director, theatre producer and private acting instructor who has appeared onstage or been involved behind-the-scenes in more than 250 theatrical and literary arts productions around the country. He is best known for touring performances as His Most Revered Lordship, Sir Richard Drury Kemp-Kean, the hero of his original one-man show of Shakespeare and time-travel comedy "A Bit of the Bard" and for his 15 years of work as The Founder, Artistic Director and Producer of the multiracial, non-union professional, classical and contemporary chamber theatre, The Excaliber Shakespeare Company of Chicago. Mr. Robinson during the course of his initial training in The Theatre as a teen and early professional career worked with such Windy City groups and organizations as The Chicagoland High School Theatrical Troupe ( a multiracial youth organization for which he would appear in no less than eight productions, including playing Nathan Detroit under the skilled direction of J. J. Stamm and Nick Jason in a 1977 revival of Frank Loesser's "Guys and Dolls" opposite future 1993 Broadway Tony Award Winner Tonya Pinkins as Miss Adelaide on the stage of The Whitney M. Young Magnet High School Performing Arts Center ), The Aspiring Artists Production Company, Inc. and The Chicago City Theatre at the historic Fine Arts Building in The Loop. Over the decades, he has played leading and featured roles with such regional companies as The Theatre Project Company of St. Louis, The National Shakespeare Company Tour of New York, The Indianapolis Shakespeare Festival at Garfield Park Amphitheatre and on state-wide tour, The Snowmass / Aspen Repertory Theatre of Colorado, The Derby Dinner Playhouse of Clarksville, Indiana, and both The King Richard's Renaissance Faire and Bristol Renaissance Faire of Kenosha, Wisconsin. Mr. Robinson during the course of his work in The Theatre has received multiple awards and honors including: The 1981 Fort Wayne News-Sentinel Reviewer's Recognition Award as Outstanding Thespian of the Season for a gallery of roles he performed at northern Indiana's Enchanted Hills Playhouse of Syracuse ( including, most notably, his portrayal of Fagin in multitalented Director Dr. Jeffrey P. Koep's staging of Lionel Bart's "Oliver!' ); a 1992 St. Louis Area Harpooners of the Sea Unicorn Certificate of Honourary Membership Award for his performance as Sherlock Holmes and staging of The Excaliber Productions, Ltd. mounting of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's "Sherlock Holmes: The Final Problem!" at The Midtown Arts Center of St. Louis; both a 1997 Chicago Joseph Jefferson Citation Award as Outstanding Actor In AL Principal Role In A Play and a 1997 Chicago Black Theatre Alliance Award Nomination as Best Leading Actor In A Play for his noted dramatic performance as Sam Semela in The Excaliber Shakespeare Company of Chicago's 1997 Jeff Citation Best Production Award Nominated Revival of the great South African playwright Athol Fugard's "Master Harold And The Boys" staged at The Heartland Café Studio Theatre in the Windy City's Rogers Park; a 1998 WKKC Radio Chicago Critic's Corner Fine Arts Award as Outstanding Director of A Play for his ESC revival staging of Samuel Beckett's "Waiting For Godot" ( in which he appeared as Vladimir ) at The Heartland; a 1999 Chicago Black Theatre Alliance / Ira Aldridge Award Nomination for Best Direction Of An Ensemble for his ESC revival staging of Athol Fugard's "The Blood Knot" ( in which he appeared as Zachariah ) at The Heartland; a 2001 Black Theatre Alliance / Lloyd Richards Award Nomination for Best Direction Of A Theatrical Production for his ESC revival staging of LeRoi Jones' ( Immamu Amiri Baraka's ) "The Dutchman" at The Harrison Street Galleries Studio Theatre in Oak Park, Il.; a 2013 Los Angeles Marcom Masque Theatre Award Nomination as Best Actor In A Major Supporting Role for his critically-praised performance as the historic black educator and orator Booker T.
