Darryl Maximilian Robinson is a veteran American stage actor and play director who has made multiple appearances on the internet performing arts television show "The Actor's Choice." Hosted by noted and veteran Hollywood entertainment journalist Ron Brewington, the show provides a platform for members of the entertainment industry to discuss their craft and ideas.
Chicago-born and theatre-trained, Darryl Maximilian Robinson is winner of numerous local Windy City and regional awards and honors for his work in the theatre including the 1981 Fort Wayne News-Sentinel Reviewer's Recognition Award as Outstanding Thespian of the Season for his performances in professional summer stock ( particularly as Fagin in Lionel Bart's "Oliver!" ) at northern Indiana's Enchanted Hills Playhouse; a 1992 St. Louis / St. Charles, Missouri Area Certificate of Honorary Membership Award from The Harpooners of the Sea Unicorn for his staging and performance of the title role in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's "Sherlock Holmes: The Final Problem!" presented at The Midtown Arts Center of St. Louis; both a 1997 Chicago Joseph Jefferson Citation Award for Outstanding Actor In A Principal Role In A Play and a 1997 Chicago Black Theatre Alliance / Ira Aldridge Award nomination for Best Leading Actor In A Play for his critically-praised performance as Sam Semela in The Excaliber Shakespeare Company revival of Athol Fugard's "Master Harold And The Boys" mounted at The Heartland Cafe Studio Theatre; a 1998 WKKC Radio Chicago Critic's Corner Fine Arts Award for Outstanding Director Of A Play for the ESC's 1997 revival of Samuel Beckett's "Waiting for Godot" ( in which he appeared as Vladimir ) at The Heartland; a 2015 / 2016 Los Angeles Elate Season Ticket Holder Award nomination for Best Actor for his performance as Ernest in Tad Mosel's classic one-act drama "Impromptu" ( as part of a bill of works called "Just 4 Fun" ) staged at The Lincoln Stegman Theatre of North Hollywood, California; and, more recently, a 2019 BroadwayWorld Chicago Award nomination for Best Performer In A Musical or Revue ( Resident Non-Equity ) for his noted portrayal of the dual roles of The Chairman Mr. William Cartwright and The Mayor Thomas Sapsea in the 2018 Saint Sebastian Players Chicago revival staging of Rupert Holmes' Tony Award-winning Best Musical "The Mystery of Edwin Drood" performed at the more than a century old St. Bonaventure Church in The Windy City as well as a 2022 Making The World Happening Award from Allevents.in for his numerous online theatre-related offerings during the early years of The Covid-19 pandemic.
A 52-year-long stage performer, Darryl Maximilian Robinson has also become noted as the very first black actor in American Theatre History to portray on stage a trio of classic dramatic roles including: Sir Thomas More in Robert Bolt's "A Man For All Seasons" ( in a 1984 revival presented by The University Players of The University of Missouri-St. Louis and directed by AEA Member John Grassilli at The Benton Hall Theater ); King Henry II in a 1992 multiracial cast revival of James Goldman's "The Lion In Winter ( directed by Mr. Robinson for his chamber theatre Excaliber Productions, Ltd in St. Louis and staged at The Wabash Triangle Cafe ); and Andrew Wyke ( opposite the talented actor Sean Nix as Milo Tindle ) in a 2000, 30th Anniversary, all-black cast revival of Anthony Shaffer's "Sleuth" presented under Mr. Robinson's direction by his chamber theatre The Excaliber Shakespeare Company of Chicago at The Harrison Street Galleries Studio Theatre of Oak Park, Illinois.
Also an experienced Shakespearean actor, private acting instructor and adapter of literary classics, Darryl Maximilian Robinson has multiple videos of his theatre work available for viewing at his YouTube channel. Mr. Robinson has made it a point to encourage his private students and professional colleagues to take a serious interest in the documentation of their work in The Theatre. To that end, he was quite pleased and proud to take part in a series of tv / podcast interviews that gave him a forum to discuss his work and express his personal viewpoints.
Darryl Maximilian Robinson has appeared on "The Actor's Choice " several times ( five episodes between 2016 and 2024 ), sharing his experiences and insights from his extensive career in theatre. His most recent appearance was his fifth visit, where he discussed his 50 years as an American stage performer, the challenges of performing during a global pandemic, and the importance of voting in a democracy.
