Darryl Maximilian Robinson, a 51-year-long American stage performer whose local Los Angeles theatre award honors include a 2013 Kentwood Players' Marcom Masque Theatre Award nomination for Best Actor In A Major Supporting Role for his critically-praised performance as the historic Black educator and orator Booker T. Washington in a revival of the musical "Ragtime" at The Westchester Playhouse, a 2015 / 2016 Emmanuel Lutheran Actors Theatre Ensemble-ELATE Season Ticket Holder Best Actor Award nomination for his performance as the debonair, but aging leading man Ernest in Tad Mosel's classic one-act drama of Life In The Theatre "Impromptu" at The Lincoln Stegman Theatre in North Hollywood, California, and, most recently, a 2024 Broadwayworld Los Angeles Award nomination for Best Supporting Performer In A Play for his portrayal of Chicago Newspaper Reporter Roy V. Bensinger in The Culver City Public Theatre revival production of Ben Hecht's and Charles MacArthur's "The Front Page" presented outdoors at The Carlson Memorial Park in Culver City, provides his rendering of Poe's "The Conqueror Worm" as a dramatic reflection of current times.
This literary arts performance videotaped and photographed on July 19, 2022 by skilled fellow actor Danny Belrose, was staged at the Levitt Pavilion in Los Angeles' MacArthur Park and is part of Darryl Maximilian Robinson's Excaliber Shakespeare Company Los Angeles Archival Project.
In this interpretation, Robinson brings Poe’s haunting meditation on mortality and decay to life with theatrical flair. The poem, known for its grim allegory of human existence as a tragic play watched by angels, culminates in the arrival of the titular "Conqueror Worm"—a symbol of inevitable death. Robinson’s performance is described as “street theatre”-style, echoing his previous Poe renditions like "Annabel Lee" and "El Dorado."
If you’re drawn to Gothic literature or enjoy dramatic poetry readings, this video is a must-watch. You can find it on YouTube or through Performing Arts Live.
REMEMBER THIS POE OFFERING COME HALLOWEEN OF 2025!
