Darryl Maximilian Robinson Remembers "The Great One" Jackie Gleason's Tony Award For Best Leading Actor In A Musical Victory In "Take Me Along"

YOUR HUMBLE SERVANT IN THE THEATRE, DARRYL MAXIMILIAN ROBINSON, IS DELIGHTED TO SHARE SOME MEMORIES OF ONE OF THE ENTERTAINMENT WORLD'S BEST AND FUNNIEST PERFORMERS: "THE GREAT ONE"!
REMEMBERING JACKIE GLEASON WHO WOULD HAVE TURNED 107 YEARS OLD LAST MONTH!
He never once won an Emmy Award ( though his scene-stealing co-star Art Carney won a grip of them ).
He is considered one of the greatest stars and most memorable talents of the television comedy / variety show ( "The Honeymooners" show segments solidified his television legacy ) and he would be gladly recognized with a Peabody Award for his efforts.
He would score an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor In A Motion Picture for his wonderful and uncanny portrayal of Minnesota Fats opposite his truly gifted co-star Paul Newman in "The Hustler".
And screen legend Orson Welles would eternally nickname him as "The Great One."
His greatest career glory never came from television or film, however.
After earning glowing reviews on the New York stage during the 1959-1960 theatre season, he would bypass his equally-acclaimed and nominated co-stars Walter Pidgeon and Robert Morse, and decisively win Broadway's Tony Award for Best Leading Actor In A Musical for his delightfully vaudevillian performance of the role Sid Davis in the hit show "Take Me Along," a lively musical adaptation of Eugene O'Neill's best-written comedy "Ah, Wilderness!".
