Introduction To The Stage Career of Veteran and Award-winning Theatre Artist Darryl Maximilian Robinson

Born in Chicago in 1960 and currently celebrating 50 years of involvement in The Performing Arts, Darryl Maximilian Robinson is a veteran and award-winning stage actor, play director, theatre producer and private acting instructor who has appeared onstage or been involved behind-the-scenes in more than 250 theatrical and literary arts productions around the country. He is best known for touring performances as His Most Revered Lordship, Sir Richard Drury Kemp-Kean, the hero of his original one-man show of Shakespeare and time-travel comedy "A Bit of the Bard" and for his 15 years of work as The Founder, Artistic Director and Producer of the multiracial, non-union professional, classical and contemporary chamber theatre, The Excaliber Shakespeare Company of Chicago. Mr. Robinson during the course of his initial training in The Theatre as a teen and early professional career worked with such Windy City groups and organizations as The Chicagoland High School Theatrical Troupe ( a multiracial youth organization for which he would appear in no less than eight productions, including playing Nathan Detroit under the skilled direction of J. J. Stamm and Nick Jason in a 1977 revival of Frank Loesser's "Guys and Dolls" opposite future 1993 Broadway Tony Award Winner Tonya Pinkins as Miss Adelaide on the stage of The Whitney M. Young Magnet High School Performing Arts Center ), The Aspiring Artists Production Company, Inc. and The Chicago City Theatre at the historic Fine Arts Building in The Loop. Over the decades, he has played leading and featured roles with such regional companies as The Theatre Project Company of St. Louis, The National Shakespeare Company Tour of New York, The Indianapolis Shakespeare Festival at Garfield Park Amphitheatre and on state-wide tour, The Snowmass / Aspen Repertory Theatre of Colorado, The Derby Dinner Playhouse of Clarksville, Indiana, and both The King Richard's Renaissance Faire and Bristol Renaissance Faire of Kenosha, Wisconsin. Mr. Robinson during the course of his work in The Theatre has received multiple awards and honors including: The 1981 Fort Wayne News-Sentinel Reviewer's Recognition Award as Outstanding Thespian of the Season for a gallery of roles he performed at northern Indiana's Enchanted Hills Playhouse of Syracuse ( including, most notably, his portrayal of Fagin in  multitalented Director Dr. Jeffrey P. Koep's staging of Lionel Bart's "Oliver!' );  a 1992 St. Louis Area Harpooners of the Sea Unicorn Certificate of Honourary Membership Award for his performance as Sherlock Holmes and staging of The Excaliber Productions, Ltd. mounting of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's "Sherlock Holmes: The Final Problem!" at The Midtown Arts Center of St. Louis; both a 1997 Chicago Joseph Jefferson Citation Award as Outstanding Actor In AL Principal Role In A Play and a 1997 Chicago Black Theatre Alliance Award Nomination as Best Leading Actor In A Play for his noted dramatic performance as Sam Semela in The Excaliber Shakespeare Company of Chicago's 1997 Jeff Citation Best Production Award Nominated Revival of the great South African playwright Athol Fugard's "Master Harold And The Boys" staged at The Heartland Café Studio Theatre in the Windy City's Rogers Park; a 1998 WKKC Radio Chicago Critic's Corner Fine Arts Award as Outstanding Director of A Play for his ESC revival staging of Samuel Beckett's "Waiting For Godot" ( in which he appeared as Vladimir ) at The Heartland; a 1999 Chicago Black Theatre Alliance / Ira Aldridge Award Nomination for Best Direction Of An Ensemble for his ESC revival staging of Athol Fugard's "The Blood Knot" ( in which he appeared as Zachariah ) at The Heartland; a 2001 Black Theatre Alliance / Lloyd Richards Award Nomination for Best Direction Of A Theatrical Production for his ESC revival staging of LeRoi Jones' ( Immamu Amiri Baraka's ) "The Dutchman" at The Harrison Street Galleries Studio Theatre in Oak Park, Il.; a 2013 Los Angeles Marcom Masque Theatre Award Nomination as Best Actor In A Major Supporting Role for his critically-praised performance as the historic black educator and orator Booker T. Washington in the 2013 Kentwood Players revival production of the Tony Award-winning musical "Ragtime" staged at The Westchester Playhouse in LA; and a 2015 / 2016 Los Angeles ELATE Season Ticket Holder Award Nomination as Best Actor for his performance as the debonair, but aging leading man Ernest in Tad Mosel's classic, allegorical one-act of Life In The Theatre "Impromptu" presented as part of an evening of one-acts presented by The Emmanuel Lutheran Actors Theatre Ensemble - ELATE entitled "Just 4 Fun" at The Lincoln Stegman Theatre in North Hollywood, CA. A classically-trained African-American stage performer, who has performed and recorded noted literary works on local and regional radio and television, over the years, Darryl Maximilian Robinson has garnered critical praise for playing  leading stage roles few black actors have had the chance or opportunity to play. Of particular note are his performances as: Sir Thomas More in skilled Director John Grassilli's 1984 University Players' revival production of Robert Bolt's "A Man For All Seasons" presented at The Benton Hall Theatre of The University of Missouri-St. Louis ( UMSL ); The Cowardly Lion in Director Deborah Lynn Wykes' 1984 Theatre Project Company of St. Louis traditional stage musical revival of L. Frank Baum's "The Wizard of Oz" performed at The New City School of the Gateway City's Central West End;  Master Frank Ford in the 1985 Indianapolis Shakespeare Festival revival staging of William Shakespeare's "The Merry Wives of Windsor" at The Garfield Park Amphitheatre; King Henry II of England in Mr. Robinson's 1992 Excaliber Productions, Ltd. multiracial-cast staging of James Goldman's "The Lion In Winter" performed at The Wabash Triangle Café in St. Louis, the mystery writer Andrew Wyke ( opposite the fine and talented actor Sean Nix as Milo Tindle ) in Mr. Robinson's 2000 Excaliber Shakespeare Company of Chicago revival staging of Anthony Shaffer's thrilling Tony Award-winning Best Play "Sleuth" ( the first documented production starring an all-African-American cast ); Major-General Stanley in versatile Director / Choreographer Drew Fitzsimmons' 2014 San Pedro Theatre Club 135th Anniversary Revival Production of Gilbert & Sullivan's "The Pirates of Penzance" ( which Mr. Robinson also appeared featured in video selections on Youtube.com  ); District Attorney Flint in the 2017 Emmanuel Lutheran Actors Theatre Ensemble - ELATE revival of Ayn Rand's classic courtroom drama "Night of January 16th" at The Lincoln Stegman Theatre in North Hollywood, Ca.; and, most recently, the marvelous dual roles of  The Chairman of The Music Hall Royale, Mr. William Cartwright and the Honorable Mayor Thomas Sapsea in multitalented Director / Music Director Robert-Eric West's 2018 Saint Sebastian Players of Chicago revival production of Rupert Holmes'brilliant  Tony Award-winning Best Musical Whodunit "The Mystery of Edwin Drood" presented at the lovely, 100-year-old-plus St. Bonaventure Church in the Windy City's historic Lakeview neighborhood.  Darryl Maximilian Robinson's performance in "The Mystery of Edwin Drood" was critically-praised, documented by Fandom. com, highlighted by a delightful Youtube.com video entitled "Darryl Maximilian Robinson as The Chairman Mr. William Cartwright & Cast Go Off To The Races," and in November of 2019: The Year of Chicago Theatre,  recognized by a 2019 Chicago BroadwayWorld.com Regional Theatre Award Nomination for Best Performer In A Musical or Revue ( Resident Non-Equity ). Mr. Robinson has also worked as an adapter of classic literary texts and is noted for his stagings of "The Raven And Six
Other Points of Interest" by Edgar Allan Poe and "A Child's Christmas In Wales And More Tales" by Dylan Thomas. He is also the author and owner of three unsold and unpublished original screenplays.

Darryl Maximilian Robinson has become noted as the very first black actor in American Theatre History to portray on stage a trio of classic dramatic roles including: Sir Thomas More in Robert Bolt's "A Man For All Seasons" ( in a 1984 revival presented by The University Players of The University of Missouri-St. Louis and directed by AEA Member John Grassilli at The Benton Hall Theater ); King Henry II in a 1992 multiracial cast revival of James Goldman's "The Lion In Winter" ( directed by Mr. Robinson for his chamber theatre Excaliber Productions, Ltd in St. Louis and staged at The Wabash Triangle Cafe ); and Andrew Wyke ( opposite the talented actor Sean Nix as Milo Tindle ) in a 2000, 30th Anniversary, all-black cast revival of Anthony Shaffer's "Sleuth" presented under Mr. Robinson's direction by his chamber theatre The Excaliber Shakespeare Company of Chicago at The Harrison Street Galleries Studio Theatre of Oak Park, Illinois. Most recently, Darryl Maximilian Robinson was named a winner of a 2022 Making The World Happening Award for his numerous online theatre-related offerings at Allevents.in.
