Darryl Maximilian Robinson Recalls His 1981 Award-Winning Performance As Fagin In Lionel Bart's "Oliver!" At Enchanted Hills Playhouse
Your humble servant in The Theatre, Chicago-born and stage-trained actor and play director Darryl Maximilian Robinson, shares notes and photos of his critically-praised performance as Fagin in the 1981 Enchanted Hills Playhouse of Syracuse, Indiana revival production of Lionel Bart's classic musical "Oliver!," a role for which he was particularly named winner of the 1981 Fort Wayne News-Sentinel Reviewer's Recognition Award as Outstanding Thespian of the Season.
"Darryl Maximilian Robinson is a perfectly delightful Fagin, playing the pickpocket with just the right combination of impertinence and compassion. Mr Robinson is particularly well-cast because he, like the wily, lovable thief that he plays, obviously knows — and likes — his job." -- Bill Spurgeon, Enchanted Hills Playhouse batting 1,000 with 'Oliver,' The Mail-Journal of Syracuse, Indiana, July 8, 1981.
Staged expertly by EHP Artistic Director Dr. Jeffrey P. Koep, produced handsomely by EHP Producing Director Jill M. Stover, with fine choreography by Leta Kritzman and effective musical direction by Douglass Baumgartner, the 1981 Enchanted Hills Playhouse revival of "Oliver!" also starred Myrona Lou Laws ( Delaney ) as Nancy, Temple Schultz as Oliver Twist, Tom McSweeney as The Artful Dodgee, Don Hahn as Bill Sykes, Jozef ( Opera Joe ) McKesson as Mr. Brownlow and T. Gregg McClain as Charlie Bates.
The revival was presented July 1st through July 12th of 1981 at the theatre on the shores of northern Indiana's Lake Wawasee.
Celebrating nearly 50 years of live stage performances around the country and with involvement in over 250 theatrical and literary arts presentations, Darryl Maximilian Robinson ( Founder, Artistic Director and Producer of both the multiracial chamber theatres, The Excaliber Shakespeare Company of Chicago and The Excaliber Shakespeare Company Los Angeles Archival Project, ) was most recently named a winner of a 2022 Making The World Happening Award for his numerous online theatre-related offerings at Allevents.in.
