The Actor's Choice: Darryl Maximilian Robinson Remembers Sir Sidney Poitier, Homages William Shakespeare And Drops A Few Bars From Meredith Willson's 'The Music Man' During His 4th Appearance On Ron Brewington's 'The Actor's Choice,' Episode 8.16!
Long-time Chicago and Los Angeles theatre-goers and play practitioners may know of veteran actor and stage director Darryl Maximilian Robinson's work from his more than 15 years as Founder, Artistic Director and Producer of the multiracial non-equity professional chamber theatre The Excaliber Shakespeare Company of Chicago ( 1987-2001), and his numerous Youtube channel video presentations of speeches from numerous classic plays as part of his theatre video events company The Excaliber Shakespeare Company Los Angeles Archival Project ( which been documenting and recording his work on the west coast since 2016 ).
Darryl Maximilian Robinson won a 2015 / 2016 Los Angeles Elate Season Ticket Holder Award nomination for Best Actor for his performance as the debonair and aging leading man Ernest in Tad Mosel's classic one-act drama of Life In The Theatre 'Impromptu' which was presented on a bill of short works entitled 'Just 4 Fun' and staged and The Lincoln Stegman Theatre in North Hollywood, Ca., and more recently, he was noted for his critically-praised portrayal of the dual roles of The Chairman Mr. William Cartwright and Mayor Thomas Sapsea in the 2018 Saint Sebastian Players Chicago revival production of Rupert Holmes' Tony Award-winning Best Musical Whodunit 'The Mystery of Edwin Drood' presented at the more than a century old St. Bonaventure Church on the city's north side ( for which he received and 2019 Broadwayworld Chicago Award nomination for Best Performer In A Musical or Revue ).
But few Chicago or LA performing arts lovers are aware that Mr. Robinson has appeared multiple times on the west coast on a popular internet performing arts television show to discuss his life in The Theatre or his initial upbringing and stage roots.
Upon his arrival at UBNGO radio and television studio in Burbank, CA. for his fourth appearance with veteran host and entertainment journalist Ron Brewington on 'The Actor's Choice,' the studio's excellent chief engineer Tony, warmly welcomed Darryl Maximilian Robinson ( The Founder of both The Excaliber Shakespeare Company of Chicago and The Excaliber Shakespeare Company Los Angeles Archival Project ) to the show's comfortable, modest and intimate set.
Mr. Robinson would be the last of three guests to appear ( which also included veteran Hollywood tv producer and sit-com show script writer Lloyd J. Schwartz, noted for his work on "The Brady Bunch" and "Guilligan's Island", as well as for his many successes as an LA playwright; and creative process-focused film, television and stage experienced actress Laura Liguori ) and Mr. Robinson was aware ( due to Covid-19 precautions ) that he would be the only participant on the set of the show, as the other guests, as well as esteemed Host Ron Brewington would take part in the show via ZOOM.
Darryl Maximilian Robinson began his portion of 'The Actor's Choice' by evoking a few bars of the song '76 Trombones' from Meredith Willson's 'The Music Man' and noted that 2022 marked the 60th anniversary of the film version of the Broadway classic ( with stars Robert Preston as Harold Hill and Shirley Jones as Marian Paroo ) and noted the movie was shot on location at Warner Bros. Studios ( only a stone's throw away from the doors of UBNGO).
He also observed the upcoming 458th birthday of the immortal bard, William Shakespeare and provided an impromptu recitation of Sonnet #15.
But the real reason why Darryl Maximilian Robinson was present for the Monday April 18, 2022 edition of 'The Actor's Choice' was so that he might have an opportunity to discuss the passing and many artistic and humanitarian contributions of the late, great Hollywood screen and Broadway stage legend Sir Sidney Poitier. And Mr. Robinson was thrilled that Host Ron Brewington gave him a most excellent forum to do just that. Sir Sidney Poitier has left a great legacy for all Americans, but especially for those involved in the arts!
Darryl Maximilian Robinson's appearance on 'The Actor's Choice' is currently available for viewing. Pre-and-post show videos and photos of Mr. Robinson's arrival and departure from UBNGO studios were captured by long-time Excaliber Shakespeare Company Member J.L. Watt and can be found at Mr. Robinson's You Tube channel. Featuring interviews about actors, directors, playwrights, screenwriters, producers and other entertainment industry professionals, the internet performing arts television show 'The Actor's Choice' is now in it 8th season and continues to serve as a forum for artists to discuss their craft and the choices they have made.
Darryl Maximilian Robinson has become noted as the very first black actor in American Theatre History to portray on stage a trio of classic dramatic roles including: Sir Thomas More in Robert Bolt's "A Man For All Seasons" ( in a 1984 revival presented by The University Players of The University of Missouri-St. Louis and directed by AEA Member John Grassilli at The Benton Hall Theater ); King Henry II in a 1992 multiracial cast revival of James Goldman's "The Lion In Winter ( directed by Mr. Robinson for his chamber theatre Excaliber Productions, Ltd in St. Louis and staged at The Wabash Triangle Cafe ); and Andrew Wyke ( opposite the talented actor Sean Nix as Milo Tindle ) in a 2000, 30th Anniversary, all-black cast revival of Anthony Shaffer's "Sleuth" presented under Mr. Robinson's direction by his chamber theatre The Excaliber Shakespeare Company of Chicago at The Harrison Street Galleries Studio Theatre of Oak Park, Illinois.
